Game 6: Find Your Way
Skill focus: Orientation skills
Suggested users: Children aged 6–12. Select the level according to English proficiency, task demands and individual support needs, rather than age alone.
Learning objective
After completing this activity, learners will be able to follow and interpret spatial instructions, arrows and directional vocabulary to identify the correct route, position or destination.
For children – How to play
- Find the starting point.
- Follow the arrows, pictures or directions one step at a time.
- Choose the correct place, position or route.
- Read or listen to the feedback. You can follow the route again and try another answer.
Information for teachers – Learning purpose and suggested support
This game develops spatial orientation and the English language used to describe position, movement, routes and directions. Learners may practise left and right, up and down, straight ahead, near and far, above and below, next to and between, in front of and behind, starting points, arrows and simple maps.
Suggested teacher support:
- Make the starting point, route, arrow direction and destination visually unmistakable.
- Present one direction at a time when working-memory or visual-processing demands are high.
- Allow learners to say each direction aloud while following the route.
- Clarify the difference between the learner’s perspective and the perspective shown in the picture.
- Connect the feedback directly to the English direction or preposition used in the task.
Discussion prompt: “Where did you start, which directions did you follow, and where did you finish?”
